8 in. Axle and Housing

Three rear ends were used. The early '70 came with a 7.25 in. gear. In '71 an eight inch with 4-lug axles were used with cars with 6 cylinders. The '71 Maverick that came with a V8 got an eight inch with 5-lug axles. The 4-lug 8 in. rear end is different than the 5-lug V8. The 5-lug axle bearings are larger in both I.D and O.D. and are too big too fit into the 4-lug housing. The '73 models came with 5-lugs on both 6 and V8 models

Starting in '74 the center hole in the wheel is larger to fit the larger front spindles and larger hubs. A 70-73 wheel will not fit on a 74-77.

71-77 have staggered rear shocks.
